The Ettal Monastery

		Between the Ammertal and Loisachtal valleys… …at an elevation of 870 meters, the  Benedictine Monastery was founded in 1330 by Ludwig der Bayer.  Ettal is counted among Bavaria’s most imposing and unique abbeys and with good reason. It represents a high point of Bavarian building design, with its mighty Basilica, the beautiful rococo sacristy, not to mention the many historical treasures found in the library. It also features the “Prince’s Apartment,” built in the 18th century, and the Dresdner Room, named in honor of the city of Dresden, and the Chinese Hall, constructed in the mid-18th century, a brightly lit room that served as a venue for galas and banquets hosted by luminaries of the time. Today, the Monastery is home to 50 Benedictine Monks.  There is also a Benedictine secondary school, a boarding school and a number of monastic enterprises. We gladly provide private tours but reservations are required.
